The final game against Spain had a similar scenario. The first half of the match was quite boring. We only saw a few opportunities for both teams and a 0-0 result. Both teams saved their best for the second part. Just as in the semi-final, the rival was the first team to score. France created a superb play with a shot that ended up on the crossbar, but Spain reacted right away and scored a great goal in the immediate counterattack.
However, the Spanish team didn’t have the chance to celebrate, as an excellent play from Benzema set the equalizer, only two minutes later. Real Madrid’s forward shot an amazing diagonal from the border of the area that Unai Simon couldn’t stop. Finally, in the 80th minute, Mbappé appeared at the perfect position, to face the goalkeeper in a 1 vs 1 situation to seal the final 2-1 victory.
The controversy
Mbappé’s goal brought a lot of controversy on different social networks. The official game checked the play through the VAR system, and the visuals showed how the French striker was offside. However, the officials allowed the score. Later on, the experts checked the full replay and explained the rule applied during the play.
When Mbappé received the ball, he was certainly offside. However, Eric García (Spanish defender) tried to block the pass and touched the ball. That simple touch created a new play that ‘enabled’ a legal position for Mbappé. Hence, the call from the VAR was the correct one. Although it is not one of the best new rules in football and surely not a popular one, it is always good to know that such an important game enjoyed fair play.
