Guanyu Zhou: first Chinese driver on Formula 1

Last Tuesday, November 16, the last available place for the 2022 Formula 1 season was confirmed. As the only new starting driver on the grid, Guanyu Zhou reaches the first category of motorsport as the first Chinese driver to participate in the Formula 1.

From Shanghai to the Alfa Romeo car

At just 22 years old, Zhou has received the opportunity that many seek from an early age. But let’s talk about his start behind the wheel.

In 2013, the Chinese driver won the British Super 1 kart championship and the Rotax Max Euro Challenge in the junior category. A year later, he was runner-up in the Rotax Max Euro Challenge Senior. In 2015, Zhou competed in the Italian Formula 4 Championship, where he was runner-up.

Also, during that season he was awarded the “Anthoine Hubert Award” as rookie of the year. In 2020, Zhou achieved his first victory in F2 in Sochi; this time, he finished sixth in the championship.

Currently, Zhou disputes the championship of the 2021 season with Oscar Piastri. With two races remaining, Zhou ranks second in the standings.

After participating in several tests; he even drove a car for Alpine in the free practice of the Austrian Grand Prix in 2021 together with Fernando Alonso, Guanyu has been confirmed for the 2022 season of Formula 1 as the official driver for Alfa Romeo, taking the place left by the Italian Antonio Giovinazzi.
