The English Premier League’s Surprising Move in the Sports-Betting Nexus

Check all the details here of why the English Premier League has fine-tuned its betting brand sponsorship promotion policies.
EPL and gambling ads

Sports and betting have become so interdependent that it is hard to imagine one without the other. The two have a mutual influence that affects both fans and athletes. Many sports fans would lose interest in watching games if they could not bet on them for fun or profit. This is especially true in football, where millions of people rely on online sports betting for their income. They place bets on every football event they can find at the best online bookmakers of their preference.

This is especially evident in Asia, Latin America, and Africa, where football betting is growing rapidly among young and old alike. But this is not the whole story. The other side of the coin is that sports betting companies are one of the main sources of funding for sporting events worldwide. They sponsor clubs and leagues in exchange for exposure and loyalty. It is difficult to measure the extent of the relationship between sports and betting. The two are almost inseparable. That’s why the English Premier League’s  (EPL) recent decision has raised a lot of eyebrows.

Voluntary Ban on Gambling Shirt Sponsorship: Why Now in EPL?

The EPL announced in April 2023 that “[the] Premier League clubs have today collectively agreed to remove gambling sponsorship from the front of clubs’ matchday shirts, becoming the first sports league in the UK to take such a step voluntarily to reduce gambling advertising.” The decision is part of the league’s effort to curb gambling; an activity that has often been a major concern for many governments worldwide.

Many premier league clubs have been serving as advertising platforms for various betting houses. It is an old practice that is not only prevalent in Europe but also in other parts of the world. The idea is usually linked to brand promotion. Millions of dollars are invested each year in this. The estimated value of front shirt adverts for the EPL this year is about £60 million. This is how much clubs earn just by having betting company names printed on the front of their shirts.

Last year, the Chairman of the English Football League Rick Parry confirmed this huge contribution when he said that the league generates over £40 million a year from sports betting sponsorship. This is big business. It has helped clubs for decades and most likely will continue to do so for a long time. All 20 EPL clubs are said to have agreed on the ban for fear of stricter government regulations. This means they would have preferred otherwise if something more serious wasn’t looming over them.

The EPL's Preemptive Move to Promote Responsible Gambling

Gambling is one of the most popular and widely advertised activities today, but it also has a dark side. The concept of responsible gambling often gets overlooked. As it is, betting is easy. Winning is fun. But losing is not so pleasant. Unless one is fully prepared for losses, gambling is not the best option as it is often advised. That’s because it can have negative consequences. And with its addictive nature, immature minds are often discouraged from engaging in the business. Minors are especially prohibited from betting; unfortunately, there is no way to identify adults with minor minds. The idea is that betting is great as long as the bettor can handle both sides of the game maturely.

The current EPL decision, therefore, has been motivated by irresponsible gambling, so to speak. Behind it are victims of gambling-related harms. They include recovered addicts, families of deceased addicts, and several others with strong complaints against the trade. Through the Gambling-Related Harms All-Party Parliamentary Group, these individuals are making their voices heard.

Current Situation

The idea is to remove gambling sponsorship in sports in all its forms. This is to reduce its impact on children and somehow control the level of gambling addiction, which is also one of the goals of responsible gambling advocates like the leading betting agent –BET-IBC. It is from this perspective that the EPL is taking a very high precautionary move to remove the names of betting sponsors from the front of their shirts for fear of stricter regulations. The process will last until 2026, after which all EPL teams will be expected to have removed all betting sponsors on the front of their shirts. Betting adverts will continue to run normally in stadiums and other forums. This is the current situation of the EPL, the first league in England to lead the campaign for responsible gambling.
